AI Model Extraction
Model extraction attacks allow adversaries to create a functional copy of an ML model by systematically querying it and analyzing responses. This steals intellectual property and enables offline vulnerability analysis.
Overview
Model extraction (model stealing) attacks allow adversaries to create a functional replica of a machine learning model by querying its API and analyzing the responses. Attackers can then use the stolen model to discover vulnerabilities, craft adversarial inputs, or extract training data -- all without the cost of training the model themselves.
Impact
Intellectual property theft, creation of adversarial attacks, competitive advantage loss, privacy violations from training data extraction.
Remediation
Implement rate limiting on model APIs, monitor for systematic querying patterns, add noise to model outputs, use watermarking techniques, and restrict API access.
Implement strict rate limiting on prediction APIs
Monitor for systematic querying patterns
Add controlled noise to model outputs
Use model watermarking techniques
Require authentication for model API access
