SOC-as-a-Service: Building Automated Security Operations with Agent-Based Monitoring

What is SOC-as-a-Service?

SOC-as-a-Service (SOCaaS) delivers the capabilities of a full Security Operations Center without requiring organizations to build and staff one in-house. SuperClue's SOC module combines real-time infrastructure monitoring, automated breach detection, AI-powered threat analysis, and compliance-ready incident response into a single platform.

Traditional SOC operations require 24/7 staffing, expensive SIEM tools, and months of tuning. SuperClue eliminates this overhead with an agent-based architecture that you install with a single command.

Agent Architecture

How the SuperClue SOC Agent Works

The SuperClue monitoring agent is a lightweight Python process that deploys on your servers. It is built for low resource overhead, reports its own CPU and memory use with each heartbeat, and provides continuous visibility into your infrastructure.

Deployment is a single command:

curl -fsSL -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_INSTALL_TOKEN" https://superclue.io/api/soc/install/linux | sudo bash

What the Agent Monitors

Every 60 seconds, the agent collects and transmits encrypted telemetry:

  • System Metrics: CPU utilization, memory usage, disk I/O, load averages
  • File Integrity: SHA-256 checksums of critical system files (/etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, SSH configs, application configs)
  • Network Connections: Active connections, listening ports, outbound traffic analysis
  • Process Monitoring: Running processes, new process detection, anomalous process behavior
  • Security Events: Authentication failures, privilege escalation attempts, suspicious file access patterns
  • User Activity: Login sessions, sudo usage, cron job modifications

Agent Security

The agent authenticates with SuperClue using a unique secret per agent. All heartbeat data is sent over encrypted HTTPS connections. The agent:

  • Does not modify system files or configurations outside active-response actions
  • Can be uninstalled with a single-use uninstall token issued from the dashboard
  • Auto-updates to the latest version with cryptographic signature verification
  • Observes by default, and acts on the host (for example firewall block, kill process, isolate host) only through the active-response commands and policies you configure, on Linux and Windows

Real-Time Monitoring Dashboard

SOC Live View

The SOC Live dashboard provides a real-time overview of all monitored infrastructure:

  • Agent Status: Online status for every deployed agent and machine
  • Incident and Breach Counts: Open incidents and active breaches at a glance
  • Alert Feed: Real-time stream of security events as they occur
  • Resource Utilization: CPU, memory, and disk metrics on each agent's detail page

Agent Detail View

Drilling into an individual agent reveals:

  • System Information: OS version, kernel, hostname, IP addresses
  • Heartbeat Log: A heartbeat-by-heartbeat record of what each collector reported
  • Module Activity: Which collectors ran across all heartbeats
  • Security Timeline: Chronological log of all security-relevant events, including file integrity changes

Breach Detection Engine

7 Breach Patterns

SuperClue's breach detection engine monitors for 7 categories of security incidents, each mapped to DPDP Act data categories:

1. Credential Dumps

  • Detection: Unauthorized access to /etc/shadow, credential files, or password databases
  • Indicators: Mass read of authentication stores, password hash extraction
  • DPDP Category: Authentication credentials

2. PII Exposure

  • Detection: Large volumes of personal data accessed or transmitted externally
  • Indicators: Patterns matching Aadhaar numbers, PAN cards, email addresses, phone numbers
  • DPDP Category: Personal identifiers

3. Mass Data Exfiltration

  • Detection: Unusual outbound data transfer volumes
  • Indicators: Large file transfers, database dumps, compressed archives sent to external IPs
  • DPDP Category: Multiple data categories

4. Database Compromise

  • Detection: Unauthorized database access or modification
  • Indicators: Direct database file access, unusual query patterns, schema modifications
  • DPDP Category: Stored personal data

5. Ransomware Indicators

  • Detection: File encryption patterns, ransom notes, known ransomware signatures
  • Indicators: Mass file modification with entropy changes, .encrypted extensions
  • DPDP Category: All data categories (availability breach)

6. Unauthorized Access

  • Detection: Access from unknown IPs, privilege escalation, lateral movement
  • Indicators: SSH from new sources, sudo to root, new user account creation
  • DPDP Category: Access control breach

7. Financial Data Exposure

  • Detection: Access to payment records, financial databases, transaction logs
  • Indicators: Credit card patterns, bank account access, financial report extraction
  • DPDP Category: Financial data

Automated Incident Creation

When a breach pattern is detected, SuperClue automatically:

  1. Creates an incident ticket with severity classification
  2. Starts the 6-hour CERT-In reporting clock
  3. Identifies affected data categories for DPDP compliance
  4. Notifies assigned SOC analysts via email and WebSocket
  5. Starts any matching auto-trigger incident response playbooks
  6. Makes AI-powered root cause analysis available with one click

Shift Management

SOC Analyst Scheduling

SuperClue includes built-in shift management for SOC teams:

  • Shift Definitions: Create shifts with specific hours, days, and assigned analysts
  • On-Duty Tracking: Dashboard shows who is currently on duty
  • Shift Handover: Structured handover process transfers context about open incidents, active breaches, and pending actions
  • Auto-Assignment: New incidents can be automatically assigned to on-duty analysts
  • Coverage Heatmap: Visual representation of shift coverage across the week

Getting Started

Deployment Checklist

  1. Create your SuperClue account and navigate to SOC Monitor
  2. Issue an install token for your first agent
  3. Deploy the agent using the one-line curl command
  4. Verify connectivity in the SOC Live dashboard
  5. Configure alert thresholds for your environment
  6. Set up shift schedules if running a multi-analyst SOC
  7. Create incident response playbooks for your most common threat scenarios

Recommended Agent Placement

  • Web servers (detect application-layer attacks)
  • Database servers (detect data exfiltration)
  • Authentication servers (detect credential attacks)
  • CI/CD servers (detect supply chain attacks)
  • Jump boxes / bastion hosts (detect lateral movement)

SuperClue's SOC module transforms reactive security into proactive defense, giving your team the visibility and automation needed to detect and respond to threats in real time.
